Sample Project
An assignment might start with senior management concerned with the financial results of a division. I was once asked to examine the financial results of an 18-hole golf course. While the organization kept extensive manual statistical information (i.e., number of rounds played, etc.), it did not dissect sales data captured by its registers. My first challenge was to identify current revenue trends by performing a detailed analysis of the sales data. The next step was to analyze the fixed and variable costs of running the golf course.
By providing Course Management with a dedicated financial resource, we were able to prove one of their suspicions: due to the pricing structure, a significant portion of club members were paying average fees that were below the fixed costs to run the operation. Armed with detailed, indisputable facts, Management was able to convince their board members to restructure the revenue pricing plan and increase average per round revenue. In addition, because management was a close partner during the analysis, they learned to delve into the financial transactional data and to identify future potential issues.
While each assignment is different, the above example highlights several commonalities: partnership with the client, tangible results and developing the client’s ability to analyze their data.
